The Black Cat Trail, located in the Morobe Province in PNG is a rough overland track running south from the coastal village of Salamaua into the mountain village of Wau.
Trekking the Black Cat Trail is not for the faint hearted. The track is still in a very raw state. It is one of the toughest treks to undertake in PNG with its leech and snake-infested jungle, moss covered rocks and fallen tree stumps, precarious cliff crossings and potentially dangerous river crossings. A true adventure!
Professional bushwalkers have described the Black Cat as the hardest walk they’ve ever done. The Lonely Planet guidebook quotes a local expatriate, as saying the Black Cat is “suitable only for masochists and Israeli Paratroopers”.
Having stated all that, Back Track Team members are looking forward to researching this trek. It has been our experience, that treks described as ‘too difficult” for the public , can in most cases, be achieved by anyone who is properly prepared.
In 2011 Back Track has a private group of hardy ex kokoda Trekkers who are motivated and ready to take on the challenge. We look forward to posting a summary of their trek here . Our first Black Track exploratory trek is , scheduled for 19 September 2011.
