Back Track Adventures involvement with PNG and the Kokoda TrackWe sent our first trekkers over the Kokoda Track as far back as 1985. Then, only a handful of people ever walked the Track in any year. At the same time, we were involved in an ambitious trek into the Strickland Gorge in the Southern Highlands in the West Sepik Region. But in the following years, there was not enough interest for us to continue to try and sell this trek. It remained the same all through the early 90's with public interest really only developing in the very late 1990's. Interest in the history of the Kokoda Track grew due to many reasons, but after a few Kokoda documentaries appeared on TV screens, theTrack was soon to be of interest to every Australian. These documentaries nearly always featured Australian sporting celebrities and actors struggling over the Track. Though some of the documentaries were good and some very poor, they were always very entertaining. With this renewed public interest and the then Prime Minister John Howard opening the remote Kokoda Memorial on the battlesite at Isurava on the 14th August 2002, Kokoda trekking was reborn.
Since 2002 ,our trekkers have delivered large quantities of school books and school supplies to schools all along the Track and as well, we have supplied football jerseys, sporting equipment, trophies and prize money, to help develop and promote village sporting activities. From 2010 onwards, we are committed to assist an ambitious Village Homestay project being developed in the Kokoda area by the local community. Our proud Involvement in the development of the Adventure Travel Industry worldwide. In the 80’s the Adventure Travel Industry was only a small part of the worldwide travel scene. From those very early years, Back Track has played an important part in the marketing and sales representation of leading domestic and International brands, many of which are leaders worldwide today. They include: Tailwinds Bicycle Touring Company, African Wild Life Safaris, Peregrine Adventures, Geckos Adventures, Alpine Guides, The Imaginative Traveller, Truck Africa, Encounter Overland, Worldwide Adventure Travel, Dragoman, GAP, Outback Camel Company, Guerba, Exodus and Classic African Safaris. We are proud of the part we played in the development of the Industry and bring that experience and knowledge into the development of new Back Track Adventures holidays. Our Kokoda trekking philosophyWe strongly believe that our trek over the Track should be an adventure holiday, a cultural and historical insight, as well as a physical and mental challenge. Our sensible approach to trekking allows for time to stop and enjoy the villages and the culture as well as gain a good understanding of the war campaign. We acknowledge that for most trekkers, completing the KokodaTrack will be a tough physical and mental challenge. However, we also note that it should be a fun and rewarding holiday experience as well. Our sensible itinerary provides enough time to explore the overwhelming majority of battle sites and lesser significant historical war locations. There are half days as well ensuring a proper mix of effort and recovery and this recovery, or relaxation time, allows for an opportunity to meet and mix with the local people. Our Trek Leaders love their job. They love sharing their passion with you for trekking the Track, while explaining the war history, providing an understanding of the culture and sharing the beauty of the jungle environment and the trekking challenge. Most importantly, they will ensure that you finish the Track safely and with a lasting understanding of what the Kokoda Campaign was all about. The fascinating war stories, relived as you trek, of the soldiers who fought and died along every foot of the Track will never be forgotten. Our ultimate aim for all our Kokoda trekkers is that we all, in some small way, gain an understanding of the challenges our soldiers faced and overcame, their courage, mateship, endurance and sacrifices. Your trek over the Kokoda wartime Track with Back Track Adventures will be a safe, fun and a personally rewarding experience. We would love to trek with you.
