Back Track Adventures involvement with PNG and the Kokoda Track
We sent our first trekkers over the Kokoda Track as far back as 1985. Then, only a handful of people ever walked the Track in any year. At the same time, we were involved in an ambitious trek into the Strickland Gorge in the Southern Highlands in the West Sepik Region. But in the following years, there was not enough interest for us to continue to try and sell this trek. It remained the same all through the early 90′s with public interest really only developing in the very late 1990′s.
Interest in the history of the Kokoda Track grew due to many reasons, but after a few Kokoda documentaries appeared on TV screens, theTrack was soon to be of interest to every Australian. These documentaries nearly always featured Australian sporting celebrities and actors struggling over the Track. Though some of the documentaries were good and some very poor, they were always very entertaining.
With this renewed public interest and the then Prime Minister John Howard opening the remote Kokoda Memorial on the battlesite at Isurava on the 14th August 2002, Kokoda trekking was reborn.
Back Track resumed commercially trekking the Kokoda Track that same year. In that year, we sent two Teams of 15 trekkers each, professionally lead and organised, over the Track from Kokoda to Ower’s Corner which is still our preferred trek direction. In 2002, in total 365 trekkers crossed the Track. In 2009, 4,223 trekkers crossed the Track.
Since 2002 ,our trekkers have delivered large quantities of school books and school supplies to schools all along the Track and as well, we have supplied football jerseys, sporting equipment, trophies and prize money, to help develop and promote village sporting activities.
Health, education and village life sustainabilty are the major issues facing the people along the Track today. We have looked at these issues and have decided that the best course of action to help the communities is not to ‘go it alone’ but to work with others in a co-operative fashion and combine talents and resources.
From 2010 onwards, we are committed to assist an ambitious Village Homestay project being developed in the Kokoda area by the local community. Learn more, go to www.kokodahomestay.com
As well, we are about to launch the Kokoda Health Campaign. Learn more, go to www.kokodatrackhealth.com.au
