Kokoda Track is now an iconic symbol of what it is to be Australian.

The courage, endurance, sacrifice and mateship displayed by our soldiers who fought and died along the Kokoda Track are characteristics all Australians should aspire to as part of the defining character of an Australian.

Take the challenge and walk in the footsteps of the “ragged bloody heroes’ of the Kokoda Track.

Shaggy Ridge was a major Japanese stronghold and a commanding geographical feature in the Ramu Valley end of the Finsterre Mountains, south of Madang on PNG’s northern coast.

The Australian army advance on Madang from the south had to pass directly through the river valleys dominated by the heavily entrenched Japanese forces on the nearly impregnable ridge. The fight for Shaggy Ridge is a gripping tale of the heroism and bravery of our Australian soldiers. Because of the remote location of Shaggy Ridge few trekkers or historians have visited the area since the war.

Boots in Borneo commemorates the 2500 mainly Australian soldiers who lost their lives in Sandakan POW Camp and on 3 Death Marches in 1945.

We will attend the Sandakan Day Memorial Service, walk selected sections of the Death March route and visit historic war sites. We’ve added some other exciting outdoor activities to our itinerary. We will visit The Sepilok orangutan rehabilitation programme, trek to the summit of Mt Kinabalu, learn jungle survival techniques and go white water rafting.

SPECIAL NOTE: Our Back Track groups are invited to a special "High Tea" on the eve of the Sandakan Memorial Day as guests of the President of Sandakan at his residence.
